List surfaces, not just rooms
A request to paint two bedrooms can mean walls only, or it can include ceilings, doors, base trim and closets. Write down the surfaces you want included for each room. Identify any accent wall or different finish separately. Include approximate room dimensions and photos, but do not worry if you cannot measure every detail. A clear list of surfaces gives the estimator a better starting point than a single total square-foot figure with no explanation of what it represents.
Show the condition before the color
Take photos that reveal marks, patched areas, peeling sections or visible damage. Tell the estimator about a recurring stain or other known problem. Preparation should suit the condition of the surface rather than be treated as the same quick step on every wall. Sherwin-Williams identifies a sound, dry surface as important to coating preparation. The appropriate work and products need to be considered for the actual material. If the cause of damage is unresolved, make that part of the review before a finish is planned.
Make color and finish decisions visible
Provide the product, color and sheen when already selected. If you are still choosing, say so and confirm when those decisions are needed. Dark-to-light changes, several colors and different surfaces can affect the plan. Avoid assuming that leftover paint is sufficient or still suitable without review. Ask who supplies the materials and how a change in selection after approval would be handled. Keep your final selections with the estimate so the crew and owner have the same reference.
Plan for the room while work happens
Describe whether the room is furnished and occupied, and ask who will move or protect belongings. Identify access limits, pets and rooms that must remain available. A preferred completion date should be discussed before you arrange other activities around it.
- Rooms and included surfaces.
- Current condition and photos.
- Known building age or material concerns.
- Color, sheen and product choices when available.
- Furniture arrangements, access and desired timeframe.
Read the scope before comparing totals
Two quotes are easier to compare when they describe the same preparation and finished surfaces. Ask about unclear exclusions and completion expectations rather than judging only by the final number.
Ask for any undecided surface to be identified clearly so it is not silently included or excluded from the price.
